Yogu Yogu, 13850 City Center Dr #5015, Chino Hills, CA 91709
Tumblr media
Yogu Yogu is not a froyo shop. It’s a yogurt café that serves yogurt drinks, fruit teas, smoothies, and coffee. Order and pay at the kiosk. They’ll call you when your order is ready. It reminds me of Yomie’s Rice x Yogurt. They do have purple rice and oats as add-ins. They do not make their own yogurt like Yomie’s.
The Yogu (comes in two sizes, a small is $6.50 and includes purple rice or oats). I chose purple rice and no additional sweetener. The yogurt drink was a bit thicker than Yomie’s but Yogu Yogu gives you a lot less purple rice and their purple rice isn’t as chewy as Yomie’s. The drink is slightly sour and slightly tangy.
The café is cute. The theme colors are white and yellow. They have small white tables and dark green velvet chairs. There’s also a wall with fake foliage, a neon sign, and a swinging basket style chair.
Online ordering available. They also have a rewards program.

Food Consistency
My wife (who has gastroparesis and frequently needs to go on liquid diets) was watching some tiktoks about people on liquid diets.
People in both the videos and the comments had extremely different (and often startlingly wrong) ideas of what a liquid diet is.
So I figured I would do a post to clarify for anyone who might be confused, and maybe save you from having a surgery rescheduled due to eating the wrong things.
Clear Liquid Diet:
A clear liquid diet is a diet where ONLY liquids you can see through are permitted. That means no other solid food (that won't turn into a clear liquid in your stomach), no chunks, and no milk. If you're prepping for a surgery or colonoscopy there might also be limits on what food colorings are permitted as well (usually red and purple). A clear liquid diet includes:
Water
Flavored drinks (sports drinks, soft drinks, Kool Aid, etc...)
Broth/stock (vegetable, chicken, beef, etc...)
Popsicles/italian ice
Fruit juices (no pulp)
Gelatin
Coffee/Tea
Specialty clear liquid protein shakes
Full Liquid Diet:
A full liquid diet is a diet where ONLY clear liquids and cloudy/opaque "full" liquids are consumed. No other solid foods and no chunks are permitted. A full liquid diet includes:
Everything on the clear liquid list
Milk and milkshakes
Yogurt (no chunks)
Ice cream (no chunks)
Pudding
Custard
Blended Diet:
A blended diet is a regular diet in which the food has been blended with water. Usually, this is the consistency necessary for a gastric feeding tube.
Everything on the full liquid list
Smoothies
Blended soups (no chunks)
Applesauce
Literally anything as long as it's been put in a blender and is now liquid-y
Pureed Diet:
A pureed diet is a diet in which the food has been mashed into a very fine mash. It can be thicker and drier than a blended diet and the food can be "molded" into shapes that resemble the original food on a plate. This is good for people who have few to no teeth or pain with chewing.
Everything on the blended list
Mashed potatoes (no chunks)
Anything the consistency of mashed potatoes
Mechanical Soft Diet:
A mechanical soft diet is one that is easy to chew. Unlike pureed, there can be small chunks. Examples include:
Everything on the pureed list
Oatmeal/cream of wheat/cream of rice
Very well cooked vegetables
Ground and finely chopped meats
Poached or soft boiled eggs
Cottage cheese

Visiting Bahá’í Again
Day 2 of journaling and I’ve moved to Tumblr, plus I feel like a little boy again in more ways than one 🫢
9/3/2023
I started journaling yesterday and as you know, I’m serious about everything I do (he said seriously). So I started thinking about my options when it came to where I would store my entries and it was important to me that I could refer back to them from wherever, whenever.
I considered Pages on Mac, the Day One journaling app, and then Medium and Tumblr. I landed on Tumblr because I could post freely on here with no expectation that my writing is pretty/concise/witty/informative (Medium) and my writing could live online for free (which excluded Pages and Day One).
These posts are for me and by me, and while I don’t mind if people see these, I don’t want to write for anyone else. As a recovering people pleaser I am done existing/creating for others, and this diary/journal is no exception. If you as a reader resonate with these entries, awesome! But I’m at peace knowing that I can come back and read these.
Just like the rest of us, I’m on a journey of expansion and it’s important to me to be able to look back on the many moments I had throughout my life.
The last time I journaled was in high school, and it’s been almost 10 years since then. I’m doing this as a way to come back to myself, but also as a way to get down the absolutely chaotic thoughts and feelings that I have as a smol human.
Yes, I’m a spiritual fractal of one of many divine sparks of source/god/the universe/all that is and I’m just expanding my awareness of that with each day, post by post. 🧎🏻‍♂️
Aprille and I obviously cleared the air and got back onto the same page as we always do, and always will. She even answered questions for me about Tumblr as she was a regular user back in high school (I just used it for *orn).
Today we went all the way up north to Evanston where there is a temple called Bahá’í House.
Tumblr media
“Yes Smoking” and a very useful CTA sign
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Butterfly synchronicities I’ve been noticing of lately and a really pretty shot of the empty L
On the way to the temple, I saw cicada shells for the first time since childhood back in Okinawa/Hateruma and I got so excited! It was like I was a little boy again looking at all the cicada shells on trees. What’s funny is that just yesterday I wrote about the cicada I spotted on the tree that flew away with piss, and now I got to see even more of this childhood creature. These synchronicities are insane, man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All the different cicadas I saw (there were more but then I would’ve taken a picture at every tree and we had a temple to see 😤)
Tumblr media
The main temple is absolutely beautiful and I’m so happy I randomly came across it while exploring the edges of the CTA on Google Maps.
We sat inside for a while and meditated – I took the opportunity to practice the karma-clearing energy exercise in Voyages 2 as well the general meditation I learned from Dr. Steven Greer and what I remember of a basic white-flame meditation I remembered Eric Jacobsen (Seattle tattoo artist) told Aprille and I about. There’s a little child-like hope in me that was wishing that my meditations were stronger this time around because they were done in such a spiritual place, but who knows 🥴
Afterwards we took the Purple line back to Davis to eat in downtown Evanston. We originally intended to each at 527 Cafe but they were only doing takeout so we were redirected to Todoroki, a Hibachi sushi place.
Tumblr media
Yummy sushi hibachi baby ooo 😔
While waiting for our mobile order at 527 Cafe (they had some yogurt rice drinks we could not pass up), we checked out the beach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love discovering cool spots just by walking around, and this place is no exception 🥰
It feels amazing to be coming back to myself in this way. I loved writing, and now I can write and get my feelings off my chest when I have them.
As for my feelings from yesterday: today the revelation came to me while talking to Aprille that I need to enjoy this time being single. There will come a time that I will no longer be single, and as strange as it may seem, there are unique aspects of being separation with a romantic partner that I can explore now – and I should. Honestly, I prefer to look at things this way compared to the “woe is me” energy from yesterday. Not that I won’t have more days like yesterday BUT this understanding helps ground me. Which is something I can really use 😪
I’m not sure that every post will be this detailed, but that’s fine too. I think I needed to do it just to do it and that’s reason enough.

hallooo top five boba drinks 🧋
ask me top 5 anything!
ahhh hewwo! i love boba but this was hard bc i don’t rlly have much variety and usually stick to the same drinks hmm
---
milk tea w/ drinkable mochi - the texture of the mochi in the drink tends to weird people out but i like it! it's not too sweet but still has that nice mochi flavor
jasmine green tea w/ lychee jelly - i like this one for when i'm craving boba but already had too much sugar in the day or am too bloated from an earlier meal. it's light and the lychee jelly sweetens the tea enough so i usually get little or no sugar. it's really good too when it's hot out!
hojicha milk tea - hojicha is my favorite tea hehe i love the toastiness of it
taro milk tea - i feel like taro is super underrated but it's great! not as sweet as the other milk tea options
yogurt w/ purple rice - not a boba drink but i am scraping the barrel here lol but ya it's fermented rice and is a good alternative to boba. the yogurt and rice make this kinda heavy so i like to have this with a light snack

The new craze - yoghurt drinks.
📍Cony’s Yogurt & Rice, Perth
☁️thought of the day: “accept first, then heal”
To start off with, the past has been a terrible place for many who always kept dreaming of a peaceful life with a lil dollop of happiness, away from all the chaos, away from all the pain, away from all the miserable times.
With songs and friends being companions to keep our minds distracted, we often forget to accept all the miserable times we have had, accepting the past no matter how it turned out to be.
There is no need to drag your past into everything, there is no need to relate our present with the older times. We all have had made mistakes, we all have broken our hearts.
The only time we have is now, I hope you start accepting you the way you are, and things will fall into its place.
Stay strong, we can do this together.

What I eat in a days for inspo:
What I eat in a day cutting edition
WIEIAD : 1
What I eat in a day to stay thick and fit
Vegan $30 budget what I eat in a week
Things to ask yourself:
✨ "Do I have a fruit/vegetable, source of protein, and a carb on my plate?"
✨ "What can I add to this for it to be more filling and contain more nutrients?"
✨ "How many colors are on my plate?"
Reminders:
💞 you can always add a canned vegetable to the side for cheap if you're missing veggies in your meal.
💞 I eat things like pickled sausage, tater tots and pizza. I just use reasonable portions & add things to them. (Like spinach on pizza) I also make things from scratch a lot, which helps a TON.
💞 I didn't watch through all the what I eat in a days. But some of them looked decent. You don't have to drink chlorophyll water or ACV.
💞 Instead of asking what you can remove, ask what you can add. Have some fries, but add a source of protein like grilled chicken with some mozzarella, then some fibers with spinach and a side salad.
Toodles!

Taco night menu idea
Appetizers:
refried “beans” - made from sundried tomatoes and activated almonds. Serve it with carrot sticks and sweet peppers.
corn salad - this one uses beans, but you can use sprouted quinoa or lentils as you prefer
Main course:
Tex-mex cauliflower rice - you can use many different kinds of veggies to create the rice.
raw tacos - this is a versatile recipe. Add mushrooms, hemp hearts, sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast, sprouted quinoa, or whatever your heart desires. Even a few chunks of sweet potato can be really good mixed into veggie crumbles. Top it off with a dollop of coconut yogurt. Purple cabbage makes a great, hearty taco shell, but butter lettuce is also nice.
A nice side item for all this could be tex-mex inspired pickles, such as these. I always crave pickles when I eat tacos because my mom always served them together when I was a kid, so it’s a nostalgic taste for me.
Dessert:
Mango nice cream
Drink:
Cashew horchata

Yomie Yogurt, 18716 Colima Rd, Rowland Heights, CA 91748
Tumblr media
Will the real Yomie’s Purple Rice Yogurt please stand up? Yomie Yogurt opened in late April. Looking at the name and the graphics, they’re clearly trying to associate themselves with the famous Yomie’s from Sydney, Australia. But it seems like they’re just a knock-off and not the real thing. The Yomie’s that opened in Arcadia’s Westfield Santa Anita is part of the real Yomie’s though their signs aren’t the same as the real Yomie’s. Confused?
Anyway, I tried to go to Yomie Yogurt about a month ago and they were closed due to machine maintenance. Argh. I finally made it back. The menu is very similar to Yomie’s, with purple rice yogurt, oats yogurt, durian yogurt, etc. They don’t have the option of adjusting the sweetness level.
Purple rice yogurt ($6): A plain yogurt smoothie with cooked purple rice, it’s not too thick and the sweet, chewy purple rice is pleasant to chew on. Their version is tangier than Yomie’s Rice x Yogurt but the rice is clumpier and not cooked as well as Yomie’s Rice x Yogurt. It wasn’t too sweet or too heavy yet it was substantial.
You can order online. I ordered inside the store. It wasn’t busy but the drink still took quite some time to make. They must not make their yogurt in the store because the sign says 100% fresh yogurt delivered daily.
It was hard to find any information on Yomie Yogurt but they did write the following, “We focus all our efforts on doing the best, on striving for perfection, and on restoring perfectionism. From "No" to "Yes" rice, yogurt is made from raw materials extracted from fresh milk fermented in California. It is the only yogurt brand designated by the dairy factory and 100% safe to drink. Fruit ingredients imported by air, only stored 2-3 days, truly "fresh, safe, to ensure the taste". We are like you who are successful, or you who are on the way to success. Our attitude, earnestness, delicacy and essence are all deeply rooted in our bones." It’s the only yogurt brand designated by the dairy factory – what does that mean?
I wonder how long it will take the real Yomie’s to sue the fake Yomie’s. Fake Yomie’s is cute inside thanks to the signs that make it look like the real Yomie’s. Also, there’s a cute mural on the exterior wall.

perhaps little a gekka sakuya + bansaku? (yes this is exactly who you think it is /lh)
HEY I GOTCHU!!! (sorry this took so long ehe)
warnings for blood and injuries
you could consider this happening in the same universe as where your home is if you want hehe
Banri blinks. Sakuya, who was limping out of the alleyway, sheepishly smiles back. The bruise on his face was very eye-catching, even in the darkness of the night. He was dressed in a black jacket with the hood up so Banri couldn't see the extent of his injuries.
It had been a quick run to the convenience store for some midnight snacks since Omi wasn't at the dorms, and Banri didn't want curry or rice balls at 2 AM. Itaru had made him go on a snack run after losing a round, since it was a gaming marathon weekend. Banri sometimes forgot that everyone had different activities for the weekend, Sakuya included. He and Chikage had their own definition of the weekends. (Everyone had learned to just not ask, especially after that entire fiasco with Oz.)
"Hi, Banri."
"...You look awful."
Sakuya cradles his cheek with a pensive expression, looking everywhere but Banri. "Yep, I ran into something."
Banri snorts, walking forward. "Into someone's fist? C'mon, I'm not a dumbass."
"...I can't tell you."
Banri rolls his eyes at his refusal to tell. Sakuya was less skillful with lies than Chikage, yet he was still so secretive even if he was caught already. Nonetheless, he holds out a hand towards Sakuya, who only blinks at it. Banri gestures toward himself. "Whatever. I'll patch you up."
Sakuya turns pink, laughing sheepishly. "Oh, you don't have to do that!"
"Nah, I don't mind." Banri insists. "'Sides, Azami, Hisoka, and the Director's gonna get on my case if they see ya with that bruise."
Sakuya presses his cheek lightly then hisses. After a while, he slowly nods. "I didn't realize they got me that bad..."
"Must be adrenaline," Banri muses. He puts an arm around Sakuya's waist as his troupe mate swings his arm around Banri's shoulders then leans half of his weight on Banri. Sakuya's a bit heavier than expected. Banri could smell gasoline and something more metallic on him.
Banri leaves Sakuya on a bench right outside the convenience store, settling the other man down gently. He lightly raps a fist against Sakuya's head, muttering a reminder for him to stay awake. Sakuya nods with a small smile on his face. The cashier gives him a dirty look when he enters the store again, but Banri ignores it. He grabs a few triangular bandages, gauzes, alcohol pads, and disinfectant pads. After passing the drink aisle, Banri shrugs and grabs a pack of strawberry yogurt gummies Hyodo liked so much.
Whether it was because of the time or a silent agreement not to get into each others' businesses, neither Banri nor the cashier talked. He wordlessly gives his credit card and gets it back once the cashier was done scanning it. Banri exits the convenience store without any more fanfare.
Sakuya looks close on the verge of falling asleep on the bench when Banri exits the store. Yet, he still lifts his head when Banri walks towards him.
"Sorry for this, Banri..." He mutters, trying to stifle a yawn. Banri shrugs as he takes out the alcohol pads from his cloth shopping bag.
"No problem. Just go with me to karaoke or something to even out stuff. Can you remove your jacket and left boot?"
Sakuya narrows his eyes at him with something like distrust before he yawns and nods. He languidly takes off his jacket and unties his boot. He was dressed in all-black, so Banri couldn't see if he was bleeding, even if the scent of blood was on Sakuya. He pushes down the thoughts of where the blood could come from. His bare arms were littered with shallow cuts and numerous bruises, and there were even a few cuts on his knuckles alongside faint scars. Sakuya's left foot was swelling purple and had a slight bump to it.
Banri makes quick work of cleaning up his cuts, and he's amazed when Sakuya doesn't react to the burn of the alcohol at all. He does jump a bit when Banri attempts to straighten out his sprained foot before wrapping a bandage to keep it steady. He nods when Banri asks him if he's okay. As a finishing touch, Banri gently applies the gauze on Sakuya's cheek, lightly slapping his other cheek when he was done.
Sakuya grins at him, eyes full of vibrant energy despite his battered body. "Thank you, Banri."
"Here." Banri hands him the candy, the bag in his other hand. "As a treat."
Sakuya takes the candy from him, a small smile on his lips. "Oh right, Hisoka was telling me about this last week. I think I'll save a bit for him."
Banri turns around and crouches, looking back at Sakuya. "Get on. We're going home."
Sakuya shakes his head intently, quickly lacing up his boots. "I can walk! Don't worry about me, Banri!"
"You won't be able to walk for a while if ya keep putting pressure on your foot."
Though it took a while of Banri crouching, he soon feels Sakuya hover over his back. Sakuya hesitantly wraps his arms around Banri's neck gently, as Banri secures his hands at the back of Sakuya's knees. He stands up with a huff, adjusting to Sakuya on his back. Sakuya's hands go to his shoulders instead, and Banri could feel his light breaths at the back of his neck. Banri adjusts his grip on the smaller man, nodding to himself when he feels Sakuya relax on his back.
"You good there?" Banri asks after taking a few steps towards the dorms.
"Mhm... thank you, Banri. I owe you one."
"Told ya it ain't a problem. Wanna go karaoke after your daycare shift next week?"
"Sure."

today's vibe: i'm sitting on the burgundy leather couch under fluorescent lights, in the parlor connecting to my bedroom, my knees leaning against the armrest, listening to hozier for the first time so i can continue taking this quiz my friend shared online. as i hear the lyrics "i couldn't name that feeling carried in that voice / was it that or just the act of making noise" i suddenly wish the purple rice and yogurt concoction in my hand was chamomile tea instead, and although the lyrics "though i've handled the wood / i still worship the flame / long as amber of ember glows" makes my drink taste more splendid than before, i'm now aching to live in a deserted western town where the residents share cinnamon hints of smiles to one another, where the coast is nearby, the wind blowing coolly enough for the record stores and the coffee shops to not need air conditioning to seep through the pores of our contentment; i ache to be sitting on the floor of the secondhand bookshop perched beside the waves, wearing a turtleneck the color of obsidian and tartar trousers the shades of oatmeal and hazelnut, the 3 pm sun leaking through the windows, my only source of light, taking warm odorous sips from my mug with books sprawled all over the soft wood. i ache to flip through the creamy papers of the love song of j. alfred prufrock and to read the words "do i dare disturb the universe" for the one-hundredth time. i ache to browse the catalog and have my mind spin tumultuously over the next writer i should sigh dramatically over. and i know i've coiled this over in my mind too many times to count but the effervescence of my longing has only once now been inflicted by such heavenly music

The workers hit hardest during Covid-19’s first wave are getting pummeled again (Yahoo Finance) Since the beginning of the pandemic, one group of workers has been hurt far more than others: those working in the service industries, specifically in leisure and hospitality jobs. And in December after some progress, that industry lost jobs once again. “The most recent surge in coronavirus cases is once again battering the US labor market,” Indeed’s economic research director Nick Bunker wrote in a note. “The economic fallout from this wave of cases is hitting the industries and workers pummeled hardest by the initial damage before they fully bounced back from that first hit.” The latest hit isn’t as bad as the spring, as vaccines are rolling out and certain measures are in place, but restaurants, bars, and other jobs that depend on people interacting still cannot do business in a pandemic environment.
Squelched by Twitter, Trump seeks new online megaphone (AP) One Twitter wag joked about lights flickering on and off at the White House being Donald Trump signaling to his followers in Morse code after Twitter and Facebook squelched the president for inciting rebellion. Though deprived of his big online megaphones, Trump does have alternative options of much smaller reach. The far right-friendly Parler may be the leading candidate, though Google and Apple have both removed it from their app stores and Amazon decided to boot it off its web hosting service. Trump may launch his own platform. But that won’t happen overnight, and free speech experts anticipate growing pressure on all social media platforms to curb incendiary speech as Americans take stock of Wednesday’s violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol. Facebook and Instagram have suspended Trump at least until Inauguration Day. Twitch and Snapchat also have disabled Trump’s accounts, while Shopify took down online stores affiliated with the president and Reddit removed a Trump subgroup. Twitter also banned Trump loyalists including former national security advisor Michael Flynn in a sweeping purge of accounts promoting the QAnon conspiracy theory and the Capitol insurrection. Some had hundreds of thousands of followers.
Navy’s Priciest Carrier Ever Struggles to Get Jets On, Off Deck (Bloomberg) Aircraft takeoff and landing systems on the USS Gerald R. Ford remain unreliable and break down too often more than three years after the $13.2 billion carrier was delivered, according to the Pentagon’s top tester. The latest assessment of the costliest warship ever built “remains consistent” with previous years, director of testing Robert Behler said in his new summary of the program obtained by Bloomberg News before its release in an annual report. The Ford’s new systems—which propel planes off the deck and into the sky and then snag them on landing—are crucial to justifying the expense of what’s now a four-vessel, $57 billion program intended to replace the current Nimitz class of aircraft carriers. The continuing reliability woes with the carrier systems built by General Atomics of San Diego are separate from another continuing challenge: the installation and certification of elevators needed to lift munitions from below deck. As of November, six of 11 “advanced weapons elevators” that should have been installed when the ship was delivered in May 2017 are now operational.
In Central America, tensions rise as soldiers aim to stop migrants (Reuters) Guatemalan and Honduran soldiers will be deployed to prevent new U.S.-bound migrant caravans from advancing, military officials said, amid growing desperation among those seeking to cross and signs that some groups will depart later this month. Two devastating hurricanes late last year along with severe economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic have pushed millions of people in the already-poor region closer to hunger, leading to a steady rise in U.S.-bound migration through Mexico. In online forums, many Honduras have indicated they plan to leave next weekend in a new caravan, which has caught the attention of U.S. officials who have called on the region’s governments to stop them. Many migrants in recent years have chosen to travel by caravan because being part of a large group offers protection from criminals who might prey on them, even though traveling alone is often faster.
Johnson under fire as UK again faces onslaught of COVID-19 (AP) The crisis facing Britain this winter is depressingly familiar: Stay-at-home orders and empty streets. Hospitals overflowing. A daily toll of many hundreds of coronavirus deaths. The U.K. is the epicenter of Europe’s COVID-19 outbreak once more, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative government is facing questions, and anger, as people demand to know how the country has ended up here—again. Many countries are enduring new waves of the virus, but Britain’s is among the worst, and it comes after a horrendous 2020. More than 3 million people in the U.K. have tested positive for the coronavirus and 81,000 have died—30,000 in just the last 30 days. The economy has shrunk by 8%, more than 800,000 jobs have been lost and hundreds of thousands more furloughed workers are in limbo. Even with the new lockdown, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said Friday that the situation in the capital was “critical,” with one in every 30 people infected. “The stark reality is that we will run out of beds for patients in the next couple of weeks unless the spread of the virus slows down drastically,” he said.
In the Cold and Rain, India’s Farmers Press Their Stand Against Modi (NYT) Under a rain-slick tarpaulin, half a dozen elderly women bake roti on a wood-fired griddle—flattening dough, flipping browned bread from dawn until the sun retreats into Delhi’s evening smoke. Anyone who walks in gets served rice and cooked vegetables and, to wash it down, a cumin-flavored yogurt drink. Across the road, Jagjeet Singh, a burly man with a large fanny pack and a light purple turban, churns a hefty pot of milk coffee from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. The scenes stretching for miles around the Indian capital don’t come from a fair. They make up one of the largest sustained protests the country has seen in decades, persisting through steady rains and dozens of deaths that farmers and the Indian media have attributed to the weather, illness or suicide. For six weeks now, tens of thousands of farmers have choked the city’s four main entry points. They are challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has crushed all other opposition and stands as the country’s dominant political force, over his effort to reshape how farming in India has been done for decades. “They sold everything else. Only the farmers are left,” said 18-year old Ajay Veer Singh, who has been at the protest with his 67-year-old grandfather since it began in November. “Now they want to sell the farmers to their corporate friends too.”
China sees growing outbreak south of Beijing (AP) More than 360 people have tested positive in a growing coronavirus outbreak south of Beijing in neighboring Hebei province. The outbreak has raised particular concern because of Hebei’s proximity to the nation’s capital. Travel between the two has been restricted, with workers from Hebei having to show proof of employment in Beijing to enter the city. Almost all of the cases are in Shijuazhuang, the provincial capital, which is about 260 kilometers (160 miles) southwest of Beijing. A handful have also been found in Xingtai city, 110 kilometers (68 miles) farther south. Both cities have conducted mass testing of millions of residents, suspended public transportation and restricted residents to their communities or villages for one week.
Pompeo voids restrictions on diplomatic contacts with Taiwan (AP) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Saturday that the State Department is voiding longstanding restrictions on how U.S. diplomats and others have contact with their counterparts in Taiwan, another move that is expected to upset China as the Trump administration winds to an end. The Trump administration has sought to strengthen bilateral relations with Taiwan. It announced Thursday that U.N Ambassador Kelly Craft would go to Taiwan, a move that sparked sharp criticism from Beijing and a warning that the U.S. would pay a heavy price. In August, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar became the first Cabinet member to visit Taiwan since 2014. Pompeo said that the State Department has created complex restrictions when it comes to contacts between the two parties. He said those actions were taken to appease the Communist regime in Beijing. “No more,” Pompeo declared in a statement. “Today I am announcing that I am lifting all of these self-imposed restrictions.” The Chinese government maintains that mainland China and Taiwan are parts of “one China.” China has been stepping up its threats to bring the self-governing island under its control by military force with frequent war games and aerial patrols. It has been using its diplomatic clout to stop Taiwan from joining any organizations that require statehood for membership.
Japanese pray for end to pandemic in annual ice bath ritual at Tokyo shrine (Reuters) Men wearing traditional loin clothes and women dressed in white robes clapped and chanted before going into an ice water bath during a Shinto ritual at a Tokyo shrine on Sunday to purify the soul and pray for the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Only a dozen people took part in the annual event at Teppou-zu Inari Shrine, scaled down this year due to the health crisis, compared to over a hundred in early 2020. After doing warming-up exercises and chanting under a clear sky with outside temperatures at 5.1 degree Celsius (41.18 Fahrenheit), the nine male and three female participants went into a bath filled with cold water and large ice blocks. Fewer participants at the Shinto ritual made the water extra cold, participant Naoaki Yamaguchi told Reuters. “Normally we have more participants and it makes the water temperature a little bit warmer. But this year, there were just twelve people, so it (the cold) was crazy,” the 47-year-old said.
Indonesian divers find parts of plane wreckage in Java Sea (AP) Indonesian divers on Sunday located parts of the wreckage of a Boeing 737-500 at a depth of 23 meters (75 feet) in the Java Sea, a day after the aircraft with 62 people onboard crashed shortly after takeoff from Jakarta. Earlier, rescuers pulled out body parts, pieces of clothing and scraps of metal from the surface. It’s still unclear what caused the crash. There was no sign of survivors. Fishermen in the area between Lancang and Laki islands, part of an archipelago around Thousand Islands north of Jakarta’s coast, reported hearing an explosion around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
At a Yemen hospital wracked by U.S. funding cuts, children are dying of hunger (Washington Post) Her infant son, weakened by hunger, needed a better-equipped hospital in the capital, Sanaa, roughly 30 miles away. But Hanan Saleh could no longer afford even the $30 taxi fare. Before, she depended on a Western aid organization, Save the Children, for funds, drawn from money donated by the United States, to cover the travel costs, said employees of the organization and hospital officials. But last year, the United States slashed its funding to United Nations groups and others such as Save the Children. So Saleh had to raise money to treat her son, Mohammed, in Sanaa until those funds ran out, too. Her last option was a small hospital in this northern Yemen market town, a 15-minute walk from their home. The staff tried to build up his skeletal, malnourished 9-month-old body. “He died two months ago,” Saleh recalled in November, breaking down in tears. Aid cuts by the Trump administration and other Western countries, intended to prevent Yemen’s Houthi rebels from diverting or blocking funds, are worsening the country’s humanitarian crisis, already considered the most severe in the world. Last year’s pledges totaling $1.61 billion were less than half of 2019’s funding, and hundreds of millions of dollars committed by donors have not yet been paid, according to the U.N.’s humanitarian office for Yemen. At least 15 of the U.N.’s 41 major programs have been scaled back or closed, and additional programs could shutter in the months to come, if more funds are not received, U.N. officials say.
The Tiny Satellites That Will Connect Cows, Cars and Shipping Containers to the Internet (WSJ) Scientists who track the health of Adélie penguins on the ice-covered wastes of Antarctica are managing their cameras from thousands of miles away—via tiny satellites orbiting above our heads. Energy companies are exploring using the same technology for monitoring hard-to-reach wind farms; logistics companies for tracking shipping containers; and agribusiness companies for minding cattle. It even helped National Geographic track a discarded plastic bottle from Bangladesh to the Indian Ocean. In the near future, it isn’t unreasonable to imagine this evolving satellite technology could put a distress beacon in every automobile, allow remote monitoring of wildlife in any environment on earth, and track your Amazon shipment—not just when it’s on a truck, but backward, all the way to the factory that produced it. And it could be done at a fraction of the cost of earlier satellite tracking systems. These novel networks of nanosats—aka cubesats—are a result of a number of factors. First, the satellites themselves are smaller, cheaper and more capable than ever. Just as important, there’s the rollout and adoption of new long-distance, low-power wireless communication standards that can work just as well in outer space as they do on the ground. In the next year, hundreds of satellites from more than a dozen companies are set to launch.
